A group of academics have this week come out in support of bullfighting, stating that the events “display the best values of a person, the courage, the spirit of achievement and intelligence to overcome a bull”.
The statement was made in advance of the traditional Toro de la Vega tournament in Tordesillas, Valladolid, with the scholars advocating the “ethnographic and anthropological values of this ancient celebration”.
The intellects from Spain, Colombia and Portugal have joined in promoting a manifesto, with the aim of “raising intellectual arguments in defence of a tournament”, according to Miguel Angel Quintana, Professor of journalistic ethics at the University Miguel de Cervantes.
Quintana said that “Every year, animalistic parties pitilessly attack the events, without arguments, with images taken out of context, a celebration which shows the best values of a person, the courage, the spirit of achievement and intelligence to overcome a bull”.
According to Quintana, the urge to write this manifesto arose to break the stereotype of people who say that the bull fighters are barbarians with low intellectual levels.
The show aims to “defend a good and commendable tradition from the consistency that fosters intellectual reasoning, from the perspective of university teachers to break the myth that are only made of rude and barbarous people”, he continued.
