BARCELONA BEATS MADRID FOR AIR PASSENGERS

Barcelona’s El Prat airport overtook the capital´s Barajas airport, in terms of passenger numbers, for the first time in August.

During the month of August, 3.9 million people passed through the airport in Barcelona, according to Spanish airport authority AENA, with intercontinental passenger numbers having increased by 9.5% over the previous year, while the number of transoceanic operations increased by 8.1%.

New York and Tel Aviv are the two major cities in terms of growth, but as a single operation the Qatar Airways Doha route showed the most significant growth, with an increase of 57.7% compared to 2012. The Emirates route to Dubai also showed significant growth, with an increase of 15.3%, on their route which is destined to be served by the giant Airbus A380 from February.

The Aerolineas Argentinas connections to Buenos Aires, and the American Airlines route to Miami, as well as some North African destinations, were also showing signs of particularly important growth.

The number of non-EU international passengers grew to 871,259, a 12.95% increase, whereas the overall figure for international travellers rose to 4,502,722, representing an increase of 13.38%, which also highlights the increase in EU passengers, who in August totalled 2,060,336, 3.75% more than the same month of 2012.

Since the beginning of year 12,444,301 passengers have passed through the Barcelona’s facilities, 1.79% more than last year, with 27,513 aircraft movements, although that showed a 2.5% drop over last year, despite the passenger numbers increasing.
