SOENKE JAHN SWOOPS ESTRELLAS MAIN EVENT TITLE IN BARCELONA

Early September saw the conclusion of the EPT and Estrellas PokerStars event in Barcelona and, after the action had played out across the four-day event, part-time German player Soenke Jahn had emerged with the victory. Jahn battled a record-breaking 1,798 player pool, the largest in a European live poker event, to win the title.

Jahn faced off against a final table of eight highly talened players from across Europe, including popular local Marc Pujol. He also had to keep his focus as the Hotel Arts filled up with competitors playing in the first day of the EPT Barcelona Main Event and the conclusion of the EPT Super High Roller.

UK player Paul vas Nunes held the lead going into the fourth day, after enjoying a successful Day 3, in which he doubled up against Paul Cusi before eliminating Igor Yaroshevskyy to kick off the final table action.

Marc Pujol relieved his fortunes as the short stacked player. He doubled up against Jahn Soenke with an Ace pair to push his stack over the 2 million mark. However, fortune was not smiling on Alfonnso Amendola who, after shoving from the big blind with QD 8D could only find two more diamonds on the flop, allowing Paul Cusi to eliminate him in eighth with AS 4D.

The three chip leaders, Paul vas Nunes, Paul Cusi and Jahn Soenke then stormed into action. Cusi eliminated Lukasz Roczniak in seventh to join Nunes at the top, but then went on to lose a 2 million pot to Soenke and an additional 2 million to Nunes when he rivered a diamond flush.

Cusi eventually exited the table in sixth place after two eventful hands. The first hand saw Cusi call Marc Pujol’s shove, with pocket eights against his pocket threes. However, a 3C on the flop allowed Pujol to double up. He then moved all-in with his final 2 million, holding AS 3D. Paul vas Nunes called with an AD 8S hand and an 8H on the flop knocked out the player from Valencia.

Marc Pujol hit the rails in fifth after encountering some bad luck. He called Paul vas Nunes’ check-shove on the KH 5H 6S flop with a pair of Jacks. A win seemed certain for Pujol, however a 6H on the river gave Nunes three of a kind with his QD 6S hand, leading to the local’s defeat.

The four remaining players then struck a deal based on the ICM, leaving €12,000 for the eventual winner.

As action restarted, Alin Sameeian was immediately eliminated in fourth by Jahn Soenke who took a massive chip advantage from the win. Not long after, it was decided that Paul vas Nunes would join him heads-up after he rivered a 6 to knock out Marcelo da Fonseca.

Only one hand was played in the heads-up, with Soenke raising from the button with AD JS. Nunes moved all-in with AC 5C and Soenke made the call. Soenke paired a Jack on the flop but Nunes was just one card away from a flush. A 9S landed on the river, but was the wrong suit to help Nunes and Jahn Soenke was crowned the ESPT Barcelona champion.
