The management of the Department of Health in Torrevieja has announced that the Torremendo Medical Clinic will reopen from 8:00 to 15:00 from the 1st of October, returning to the pre-summer timetable. The centre had been open only from 8:00 to 12:00 during July, August and September due to cuts implemented by the Department of Health. However, a 700 signature strong petition demanding the service recovery seems to have had some impact of reversing the decision for the health centre that offers general medical services, nursing and paediatric care.

According to the coastal department, around 150 people took part in this year´s “Coastal Cleanup”, all doing their bit to make the Orihuela Costa a better place for all. The volunteers who participated in this initiative were not only coastal residents, with a number of participants from both Orihuela city and Hurchillo also joining in. As well as collecting rubbish, paper, containers, bottles and glasses, the biggest surprise was a collection of old tires. After the work was down, all those involved enjoyed a giant paella, as the Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, thanked those involved, saying that “the day was a success and we will try it again but perhaps more often”.

Orihuela Local Police arrested two men on suspicion of a burglary in the urbanización Entre Golf on the Orihuela Costa. During a routine patrol, officers were alerted by a security guard of the presence of two men on the roof of a house, who were apparently dismantling a telecommunications antenna. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers saw the two men, who quickly got in a van that was parked next to the house. The officers stopped the vehicle and found the men to be presenting a “state of nervousness”, resulting in the officers asking them to exit the vehicle. Having confirmed the identity of the two men, aged 33 and 40 years old from Orihuela, they inspected the house and found that that the door of a shed had been forced open a 5 metre telecommunications tower, along with 20 meters of cable, were on the ground nearby. Upon checking the vehicle, the officers than found wrenches, gloves, flashlights and a folding ladder.

The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martínez, has announced the next stage of historic recognition of the municipality of Orihuela, with the first “Orihuela Mediterranean History Photo Contest”, in order to “promote the brand through the eyes of photographers in order to attract visitors and tourists”. Photographers will have two weeks to snap away at Orihuela, from the 1st of October until the 15th, and can then submit entries to the competition from the 16th until the end of the month. With the overall winner getting a 600 euro prize, 400 euro for second place and 300 for third, participants may submit three photographs on paper and in digital form, as a Jpg image. The prizes will be awarded after the end of the month, with the winning photographs exhibited at the opening of the new 38,000 euro tourist information office at the Marqués de Rafal.
