Workers at the Panrico bakery have announced an indefinite strike that will commence on the 7th of October, in protest over plans to lay off 1,914 people in Spain and lower the wages between of others by between 35% and 45%.

Panrico are famous across Spain for both their range of sweet treats such as donuts, as well as a range of breads and savouries. They had announced earlier this month that they would be unable to pay some 4,000 workers, in order to secure enough money to maintain their operations.

Panrico has not detailed how the cuts announced will affect the different factories across the country, leading to an atmosphere among employees described as “angry”.

The majority of those workers under threat are said to be aged between 35 and 52 years old and currently earn, on average, about 1,200 euro per month before the pending pay cut.
