The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, accompanied by Tomás Martínez Domenech, inaugurated a new square in Los Balcones named after Tomás Martínez Domenech, after the area received a makeover from the municipal workers, named after Tomás who has long been considered an integral part of Torrevieja´s cultural and social fabric, with his involvement in Torrevieja Football Club, being the president of the Real Club Nautico and a member of the cultural society for the last 20 years amongst his activities in promoting the city. He was also awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Torrevieja in 2010.

The trial against 16 people, reportedly members of a motorcycle group, who are accused of killing a notary in Torrevieja in October, 2009, begins on Tuesday. The 54 year old victim was allegedly assaulted a pub in San Pedro del Pinatar, and was gunned down in cold blood. The 16 defendants are charged with conspiracy, robbery and possession of weapons, attempted murder, murder, concealment and falsification of official documents.

Residents of the Logosal complex on the urbanisation of Torreta III in Torrevieja have denounced the town hall for lack of cleanliness and maintenance of undeveloped spaces in the area, which they say has resulted in the appearance of a plague of rats. They also say that they have reported the appearance of rubbish in the area, but say that no remedial action has been taken.

Socialist spokesman in Torrevieja, Ángel Sáez, has criticized the department of culture for promoting a hotel which is outside the municipal boundaries, and thus is providing unfair promotion of activities which are not part of Torrevieja. As well as using the municipal theatre, a dance festival being promoted by the town hall is being held in the Hotel La Laguna, Rojales, in a hotel which Carolina Casado, the highly paid TV presenter who hosted the recent Habaneras contest, which the opposition group feel collectively shows a lack of commitment and trust in the quality of the hotels in Torrevieja.

The Los Verdes greens party in Torrevieja have tabled a series of questions to the plenary on “the abandonment” of the famous “cigar” by the Torrevieja salt lakes. Originally destined to become a health spa, the project met countless problems and has now become a “ruin of degradation poses to the environment”, after standing incomplete for 8 years and the scene of a dramatic fire. The group say that the building has suffered “an accelerated deterioration” by the continued influx of water when it rains and the failure of some elements, and that it is now nothing more than an eyesore.

The ACCEDE foundation has launched their second photography competition, “Ciudas Para Todos” in which they are asking for participants to submit up to three photographs on their vision of accessibility to the city for those with mobility problems. With a first prize of 1,000 euro, the awards will be made on the 3rd of December, the Day of the Disabled. The Department of Equality in Torrevieja town hall has embarked on an awareness campaign, funded by the Province of Alicante, aimed at educating municipal employees in the application of the principle of equality. Torrevieja City Council approved a Plan of Equality between men and women in 2012.
