Thursday 10th October is the date set aside for a Europe wide Air Traffic Control strike, which may bring chaos to travellers across the continent and beyond.
The French-led action is expected to spread into Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy, as workers attempt to highlight their annoyance at proposed restructuring of the airspace management system, although minimum legal requirements for service provision will have to be maintained.
Unions representing workers consider the changes to be detrimental to their profession and likely to cost the jobs of around 10,000 workers.
Matthias Maas, of Germany’s air-traffic-controllers union, GdF, said, “We expect widespread cancellations and disruptions”, which will have a knock on effect beyond Europe and even beyond Thursday into the weekend.
The European Union has urged member states to push harder with the proposed changes, aimed at also reducing congestion in its airspace, through the creation of a “Single European Sky”.
A spokesperson for the organization for European air-traffic controllers, ATCEUC, previously said that the plans focus on efficiency, but at the expense of safety, which “constitutes a real danger”.
ATCEUC said it expects around 14,000 air-traffic controllers from 28 European countries to participate in the strikes.
