200,000 WITH ALCOHOL RELATED PROBLEMS IN PROVINCE

ALCOHOL RELATED PROBLEMS

Figures recently released show that 10% of the population has problems with alcohol. In the province of Alicante that means close to200,000 people are drinking too much with over 1/3rd of teenagers aged between 14 and 18 confirming that they have been drunk at least once, some rather more, during the last month.

The health authorities confirm that alcohol is the most widely used drug enjoyed by 77% of the population. This is almost double the number of those who smoke cigarettes (40%) and 7 times more than the users of sedatives (11.7%) and cannabis (9.6%).

Within the 14-34 age groups only barbiturates are more widely taken and amongst 15-19 year olds over 22% of males and 17% of females say that they go out drinking with the aim of getting drunk.

The survey said that 36% of youngsters aged 14 to 18 acknowledge being drunk at least once during the last month, while in 2006 it was 25%, an increase of 30% in the past five years.

According to the traditional criteria of the World Health Organization, drinkers at risk (those who drink more than 50 cm3 daily, in the case of men, and 30 for women (a beer is about ten or twelve cm3) number 4% of all citizens, although in the age group 15 to 24 years the percentage is 5.5% (6.1% for women).

At the circuit level and within the social health system there are many resources. One of them, perhaps the most traditional model is Alcoholics Anonymous. In the Alicante province there are 29 support groups, ten operated by Spanish speakers and 19 other which offer support in English, German, Norwegian and Dutch.

But Toni, a Provincial delegate, says that Alcoholics Anonymous is not the panacea, it is an alternative and for most of us a complementary resource that may be used in addition to the treatment from a physician or psychiatrist. “We are not doctors or therapists and we will always encourage you to seek medical advice. What we bring is emotional support. A support group by itself is not sufficient therapy.”
