It may have been no more than a sheep in wolf’s clothing, a Toyota IQ with luxury trim that masqueraded as a baby Aston Martin, but the least expensive AM model has just come to an end. The Aston Martin Cygnet city car has been dropped from the range, according to AutoCar. A spokesperson for Aston Martin told the motoring magazine and website it had “no plans to re-enter the supermini category. Instead, focus will revert to sports cars such as the Vanquish Volante and the V12 Vantage S.” However, a quick Internet search if full of rumours that suggest Aston Martin may be working on a similar project in partnership with AMG!

The little pocket rocket, the size of a Smart car, but smarter in that it could seat four, although not for a long trip, and even then you’d have to choose between your mates or shopping for the back seats, was basically a £30,000 modified Toyota IQ with a 1.3-litre petrol engine that produced 97bhp. There are reportedly 143 examples of the Cygnet on UK roads, despite reports suggesting initial supply was unable to keep up with demand.

On the off chance you want a mini Aston Martin that’s basically a Toyota, you can pick one up second hand in Spain starting at about 30,000 euros, but they are an even rarer beast in Spain than the UK!

The car was launched with much fanfare back in July 2011 at the prestigious Royal Automobile Club when international motorsport legend, Sir Stirling Moss took delivery of his newly purchased Aston Martin Cygnet; as a surprise birthday present for wife, Lady Moss. Sir Stirling Moss said: “My greatest partner in everything that I do, Susie is an amazing person and frankly the best wife a man could have. Since seeing a pre-production Cygnet in January I knew that it was the perfect car for Susie; a proper little piece of British luxury and perfect for our life in town.”

Hand-crafted at Aston Martin’s headquarters in Gaydon, taking 150 hours to complete, at the time AM promoted it saying that “the Aston Martin Cygnet shares much in terms of design and craftsmanship with the company’s sports cars. Elegant and distinctive, individual and practical, the Aston Martin Cygnet is the ultimate Tailor-Fit solution for city living. Launched in May 2011 with first customer orders arriving at European dealers now, Cygnet is hand-crafted for the city and like every Aston Martin it can be uniquely personalised to suit individual taste and style, bringing a new level of luxury and bespoke capability to city cars.”

Even at a price, the Aston Martin Cygnet is destined to become a sort of ugly duckling classic of the AM range, vying with only the DB7, a Jag in other clothing, as the cheapest in the AM line up. Of course you could buy a second hand Toyota IQ for about 8,000 euros, and make a replica. Either way, the Cygnet, is no more!
