CRUZ ROJA RUNS OUT OF MONEY TO HELP THE NEEDY
In a desperate presentation in Almoradí this week, the Cruz Roja announced that they had run out of money to help them deliver food to the needy, as the demand for assistance has exhausted their funds.
The President of the local Cruz Roja group, José Naranjo, revealed that they have been serving more than 200 families, twice per week, but this has left them with no more resources to continue.
Naranjo said with regret that for the first time this year, “we had to tell people who have come looking for help that there is no food”.
In addition to the Cruz Roja, the Cáritas charity are also serving around 200 families and the Department of Social Welfare has asked if they can assist in providing assistance, whilst avoiding a duplication of claims.
The sports council had already made a decision to divert funding from a fiesta celebrating bicycles to the Cruz Roja, but the council themselves say that they were unaware of the desperate situation that has now developed.
The bicycle festival is held each autumn to raise funds for the needy of the municipality. Councillor Alfonso Garcia, explained that “we expect to exceed the number of entries last year and reach 900 people” at the event on the 27th of October, for which entry only costs 2 euro.
Those attending the event will be taken on a tour the city centre from the Plaza de la Constitución and participate in the draw for one of the gifts that have been donated by companies collaborating in the event. An entry fee is taken, which will be donated to the Cruz Roja in the hope that the pressure on the lifesaving service could be eased a little.
