HOW DO ‘FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN OF EMAÚS’ FIT IN?

Quantum of Malice Poster

‘Friends of the Children of Emaús’ is a registered charity founded nine years ago by a group of friends in Calpe and currently headed by Carole Saunders. It is the only registered association who fund raise solely for the children cared for by the good folks of EMAUS Altea.

The first EMAÚS Association in Spain was set up in at Altea in 1979 by Francisco Nadal. Francisco had been inspired by the work of Abbé Piérre in France. Abbé Piérre started the EMMAUS Association after the Second World War to care for the homeless. It is now an international movement established in thirty-six countries world-wide.

EMAÚS Altea do no fundraising themselves but rely very much on the efforts of ‘Friends of the Children of Emaús’ and various other local organisations: experienced fundraisers who support several charities throughout the year here on the Costa Blanca. Together these groups raise funding for all Emaús efforts: nine children’s shelters; occupational workshops for teenagers; a counselling service for families with difficult children; a shelter for battered wives; the ‘baby’ shelter for new born to six year olds which specialises in working with the Generalitat’s adoption scheme and an additional shelter in Relleu for disabled young people. As if this wasn’t enough, they also run two Residencias for older people and an emergency help-line for the elderly living on their own.

Originally, “Friends of the Children of Emaús” was set up to provide those important little extras to the children supported by Emaús Altea: gifts, outings and the fun things that all children should have. Due to the economic climate and reduced funding from government, the Friends efforts these days have had to focus much more on the essential things of life: food, bedding, clothing and heating. Fun has to come second but there is still quite a bit of it around!

Nearly 100 children with an age group ranging from two to twelve are currently partially funded by contributions from “Friends of the Children of Emaús”. You will never see photos of the children and rarely know where they are living because Emaús associations in Spain are very protective of the children’s privacy. Social Services have given the children into their care and they will do everything to keep them safe.

Every shelter is run as a family unit where the children can lose any fear they may have had and feel comfortable and loved as individuals. There are always at least five people working at each house, all of whom are qualified social workers specialising in various fields such as sociology or teaching to those with special needs. With all their qualifications they are also real people – people who love the children they care for.

Around 100 children, aged from two to their early ‘teens, live in the Emaús children’s homes in the region we all call home. They have come from difficult backgrounds; from families that could no longer care for them or even from situations where they had no family at all.

The homes very much rely on donations for most of their funding which is why ‘Friends of the Children of Emaús’, the Charity based in Calpe and headed by the Association’s President Carole Saunders, is so important. Thanks to donations received recently, the Relleu Children are now back at school with their new school books having been bought and paid for; their food for September is in the cupboard and a good amount for new school clothes has been donated.

Our thanks to all the people everywhere who are working so hard for the Children of Emaús
