Boat Fishing

Tony, Jason and me went out for a morning with ‘Orca Steve’. Trolling for about two hours produced just one little tunny (Tuna) on feathers and nothing on the dead bait.

There were lots of shoals of small tuna or mackerel chasing 3 inch bait fish and causing them to frantically splash about on the surface. I tried casting a butterfly jig into the shoals with no luck. Steve tried jigging mackerel feathers when they were close but again with no luck.

See photos of Tony and a little tunny, Jason with a pandora and a bluemouth, lastly Steve with threes up, blue mouth, pandora and Spanish mackerel.

With an offshore wind we were able to fish a mark we haven’t fished for a year. Anchoring in 200 feet and drifting back over a big hole we fished in 400 to 500 feet. It was good to see pouting and blue mouths back after last year’s storm and river mud that ruined this area.

We also caught pandoras and Spanish mackerel. Steve got hit 5 times in two minutes by almost certainly a conger (great to see them back too) but fishing only with a mackerel trace he had little chance of hooking and landing the fish. We believe it was attacking a small fish Steve had on but didn’t want to bring up 400 feet for. The conger bit his line off in the end taking the fish, bottom hook and weight with him.

Both Steve and I immediately put conger rigs down but unlucky for us the wind changed direction and took us away from the mark leaving us in only 250 feet.

I did however (I think) get a take which I didn’t see when I used a 10.0 hook through the back and under the dorsal fin of a pandora and dropped it down about 50 feet. The fish was gone when I reeled in and it certainly didn’t get off itself. A troll back to port produced nothing.

It is really good to see pouting and blue mouths back in the deeper water from where they disappeared last September when storms covered our inshore areas with a thick layer of river mud.

Shore Fishing.

The Albox Fishing Club fished on off the rocks opposite the Repsol garage in Garrucha. The sea was calm with an on shore breeze to start with from the South but changed to SW later.

Over 100 fish were caught but they were mostly small stuff, one take home horse mackerel, a saddle and striped bream

‘Jaguar Jack’ 25 fish, ‘Tony Always Laughing’ 19 fish, ‘Dizzy John’ 10 fish, ‘Flash Gordon’ 8 fish, ‘Dennis the Menace’ 6 fish. At last! ‘West Country Dave’ caught something, 2 fish and he got the bad mark too this week (Well done Dave) ‘Squiddly’ Sid 6 fish, ‘Mad Martin’, 10 ‘fish Lady Sarah’ 11 fish. Yes we now have a lady member. (And didn’t she do well)

Fish caught = Horse mackerel, saddled bream, striped bream, palomete, rainbow wrasse, wide eyed flounders, bogues and some type of blenny.

‘London Bill’ caught a few fish spinning from Mojacar’s beaches, sea bass and palometes mostly.

See photo of (I think its Bill) him fishing from the rocks at dawn.

Coarse Fishing.

Three members of the ‘Grumpy Old Men Of Los Gallardos’ club fished the Puentes lake near Lorca. ‘40 Watts’ had 30 carp, ‘10 o’clock’ 31 and ‘Cuddly Keith’ 18. The former two anglers were on the waggler and Keith used the pole.

‘Steve C’ said there are nice carp to be caught at the Cuevas de Almanzora lake and he had 10 in just under 2hrs.

Only go there to fish if you have your licence and insurance, the Guardia checked Steve’s, all was ok. A couple of Spanish lads further up, had their tackle confiscated and issued with a fine. It’s not the easiest place to get to due to the pipeline construction, a 4X4 is needed.

(Thanks for the update Steve)

Puentes Ray’ made a trip to the Puentes Lake in Murcia, a beautiful morning though a little chilly at 7am. Set up in his usual spot with a waggler using corn and pellet as bait .Fishing has slowed down in the last week and ray thinks it’s due to lower night temperatures. The fish are in really good shape now and putting on quite a bit of weight. He fished for 6hrs and bagged 30 carp mostly around the 2lb to 3lb mark and a 4lb barbel. Water levels are going down now but still quite high.

See photo of Ray with a Puentes barbel.

The ‘Rods and Reels’ match this week was the Embalse de Argos, the water level is certainly receding now as it is some 6 to 8 feet below where they were fishing at the start of the season. Barbel are now the abundant species with only a few carp being caught, although these are quite big 4 to 5lbs. The barbel have grown and are now averaging around 2 to 3lbs and giving a very good account of themselves. Again, our venue expert Doug Hornblow gave another good account of how to catch barbel up in the water.

They were again visited by the Soprona (Environmental Police) who checked their permissions from the Murcia Federation for the match, and then went and checked each angler for their license and insurance. So a word of warning if you do not have either of these documents and you fish there, you have a good chance of being caught and fined.

Top Rods on the day

1st Doug (The Welsh Goldminer ) Hornblow fishing the feeder using pellet with 42.10 kilo´s.

2nd Lenny ( ExCultural Attache ) Bolton fishing the feeder using maggot and pellet with 38.86 kilo´s.

3rd Dave ( Yours Truly ) Hoare fishing the feeder using pellet with 25.10 kilo´s.

‘Abbey Angling’ fished on the river Segura at Murcia and although it was probably passable under the bridge, fortunately they managed to peg everyone below the bridge and the water had a steady flow but was still a funny colour and not fishing to its potential for the time of year with anglers struggling for bites.

To make matters worse they were half way through the match when a large track machine turned up to begin cutting the weeds down, after a bit of arm waving and shouting the police turned up and after examining all our paperwork, which they found to be in order they advised the weed cutters to wait until the match was finished before they began.

Talking to the driver of the cutter after the match it appears the machine was going through to Rojales and Guadamar.

1st Stan (The Man) Roberts with 13.540kgs fishing the pole using bread.

2nd Doug (The Welsh Gold miner) Hornblow with 12.970kgs fishing the pole using pellet.

3rd Terry (Swing em) Screen with 11.770kgs fishing the feeder using bread.

Latest license information.

There is a problem at the moment with foreigners getting Andalucian beach and boat licenses. A new program has been introduced and NIE numbers are not being recognised, only NIF numbers. Although I have only heard this from one source and one licensing office I suspect it will be countrywide, I’ll let you know when things change.

There is a loophole for those without a nie number who want an Andalucian beach and/or boat fishing license. It will mean a trip in person to Almeria with a friend who has a nie number and it has a 50/50 chance of working! The other loophole for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Lorca in Murcia. Or the new UK sea fishing license should suffice BUT although we have been told this can be used here I have not seen a copy of this rule on paper and so it could be a problem if pulled up by the police who probably don’t know about the rule.

There WAS? a loophole for those wanting coarse fishing licenses for Andalucia who don’t have NIE documents or/and don’t want to do the 24 hour course in Spanish, see me for more details. There is talk of an agreement between all regions for any license to be used elsewhere, watch this space.

I have now been informed this method isn’t working and the authorities now suggest going through a solicitor, god forbid there are some stupid people in this world!

Anyone interested in getting a licence, there are two day courses available at Pesca y Tiempo Libre, Pozo Alcon. Email Antonio to book a place info@pescaytiempolibre.com

I’m pleased to report the Beachcomber’s three web cams are working again and the other good news is they work on both 32 and 64 bit systems and on any browser so checkout Mojacar’s weather and Mediterranean Sea conditions here. www.beachcombermojacar.com/beachcomber-webcam/

For up to date information on fishing licenses or any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (Probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. You can also contact me on Facebook @ ‘John Beachcomber Mojacar’.

Tight lines, Beachcomber John.
