According to a report quoted by Doctor Antonio Fernández Pro, from the Spanish Society of General Family Practitioners, or SEMG, 60% of men in Spain think that erectile dysfunction or urinary problems are as a result of age, and, as such, a very high percentage of people do not seek treatment until their quality of life has become “very poor “.

The report, “Prostate and Erection Problems , A Common Cause”, surveyed 1,514 Spanish men aged between 35 to 75 years old, and found that up to 11% of Spanish men suffer two of the most common urological problems in men at the same time, urinary problems caused by a benign growth of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and erection problems .

About 30% of men surveyed mentioned having had any problems with obtaining erection at some point in their lives, a figure that increases in individuals between 55 and 75 years of age to 39%. In terms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, 22% reported having urinary symptoms such as runny residual discharge after urination, the urge to urinate very often, weak or interrupted stream and difficulty starting urination due to prostate enlargement, although this proportion rose to 37% in the category of men between 55 and 75 years.

Doctor Ignacio Moncada, president of the Spanish Association of Sexual Health, the AESS, says that “The coincidence of benign prostatic hyperplasia and erectile dysfunction is not only due to age, as many might think, this relationship goes far beyond and reflects the presence of shared pathophysiological factors : the mechanisms leading to the presence of benign prostate are the same that lead to ED and perhaps the treatment of the two diseases must be tackled together”.

However, 69% of men with urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia do not relate to the appearance of symptoms of erectile dysfunction. The absence of obvious symptoms increases to 75% amongst the younger respondents, between 35 and 54 years of age.

The survey is part of the campaign launched by AESS and the Spanish Association of Andrology and Reproductive Medicine, the ASESA, in collaboration with Lilly, with the aim of raising awareness among Spanish men to recognise the relationship between these two conditions.
