TORREVIEJA UPYD CALLS FOR HELP FOR PEOPLE WITH PROPERTY TAX DEBTS

The Unión Progreso y Democracia group of Torrevieja, the UPyD, believes that the City Council should engage more effectively with the problem of foreclosures, and that the town hall should not penalise any citizen who has lost their home by means of a debt to the City through tax increase in the value of urban land.

Instead, the UPyD want to regulate those evicted who continue to pay municipal debts related to foreclosed property, as there are currently hundreds of citizens in Torrevieja who have suffered this kind of problem, and now fear tax bills which keep piling up on a property that is no longer theirs.

The local coordinator for UPD, José Serna, commented, “in a city like Torrevieja, with a large number of foreclosures, it is necessary that the City take action on the matter because of the helplessness of many citizens”. The foreclosure rate in Torrevieja is the highest in Spain, for that reason Serna believes that “the number of homeless people without resources and with a debt owed to the city is growing”.

The UPyD is now asking that the City Council start the process of drafting and approving of regulations for those citizens who can prove they are facing mortgage payment problems, and have asked that Torrevieja allocate a portion of the 2014 budget in order to cover assistance in these cases, which they also call to be retroactively implemented to 2008.
