The data on total tourist spending between January and September show an increase of 7.3%. Spending by inbound tourists amounted to 6.6 billion euros in September – an increase of 8% and another new record. Russia, the Nordic countries and France were the markets posting the largest year-on-year increases.

Total spending by inbound tourists to September amounted to 47.08 billion euros, which is a year-on-year increase of 7.3% and represents another new all-time record for this survey. According to the Tourist Expenditure Survey (EGATUR) drafted by the General Sub-directorate of Tourism Information and Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, this period also saw increases in the average spend per tourist (up 2.6%) and the average spend per day (up 2.2%).

In the first nine months of the year, the highest year-on-year increases in expenditure were posted by tourists from Russia, the Nordic countries and France.

In September, spending by inbound tourists amounted to 6.6 billion euros – an increase of 8% on the same month in 2012 and another new record.

Belgium, Russia and France were the emitting markets with the largest contribution to total tourist expenditure, while the autonomous regions to benefit most positively were Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Andalusia – in the same order as the previous month.

Emitting markets

Once again, the United Kingdom has maintained its position as the top emitting market for tourist spending in Spain in September, accounting for 22.6% of the total – an increase of 3.1% to 1.49 billion euros. Moreover, the UK also maintained this position in the period January-September with 20.7% of the total – an increase of 5.6% to 9.75 billion euros. The Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and the Region of Valencia were the main regions to benefit from this result.

The German market spent a total of 1.19 billion euros – an increase of 1.8% and accounting for 17.9% of total tourist expenditure in the month. The German market has recovered its traditional second place ranking in terms of emitting markets for tourism in Spain. In the period January-September, German tourists spent 7.49 billion euros – an increase of 4% and accounting for 15.9% of the total.

France spent 538 million euros – a strong increase of 11.4% on September of the previous year and accounting for 8.1% of the total. This was mainly due to an increase of 10.2% in the average spend per tourist. In the first nine months of the year, spending by French tourists amounted to 4.81 billion euros – an increase of 18.4% and accounting for 10.2% of the total. France therefore returns to third place on the list of top emitting markets.

As regards the other important emitting markets, it is worth highlighting the increase of 25.1% posted by Russia – with spending of 352 million euros in September accounting for 5.3% of the total. In the first nine months of the year, spending by Russian tourists amounted to 2.01 billion euros – a year-on-year increase of 24.4%.

Main destination autonomous regions

Catalonia posted significant growth in September – 15.5%. Total spending by inbound tourists in this region for the month amounted to 1.67 billion euros. This was particularly affected by the French market, with a spending increase of 35.8 million euros. Between January and September, this region accounted for 24.3% of the total – 11.43 billion euros – with an increase of 11.9%.

1.64 million euros were spent in the Balearic Islands in September – an increase of 0.5% and accounting for 24.9% of the total. Germany and the United Kingdom were the main markets for this region. In the first nine months of the year, total expenditure by tourists in the Balearic Islands amounted to 9.59 billion euros – an increase of 7.5% and accounting for 20.4% of the total. The Balearic Islands was second on the list of top Spanish regions in terms of spending by inbound tourists.

Andalusia posted noteworthy growth of 8.7% in total expenditure by inbound tourists – 959 million euros in September and accounting for 14.5% of the total for the month. In the first nine months of the year, inbound tourists spent 6.78 billion euros in Andalusia – an increase of 6.8% and accounting for 14.4% of the total.

855 million euros were spent by inbound tourists in the Canary Islands – an increase of 7.5% on the same month last year. This region accounted for 13% of the total. The region’s top emitting markets were the United Kingdom and Germany. Between January and September, 8.1 billion euros were spent by inbound tourists in the Canary Islands – an increase of 7.5% and accounting for 17.2% of the total in the period.

579 million euros were spent by inbound tourists in the Region of Valencia in September – an increase of 9.4%. In the first nine months of the year, this figure stands at 4.24 billion euros – an increase of 10.4%.

Type of accommodation, type of holiday and reason for travel

Hotel accommodation experienced a spending increase of 10.9% to 4.55 billion euros in the month, while non-hotel accommodation experienced an increase of 1.9%. Between January and September, tourist expenditure received at hotel accommodation amounted to 30.51 billion euros – in other words, an increase of 7.6%.

Independent travellers spent 4.39 billion euros and increased spending by 8.7% in the month, while tourists who travelled on a package holiday spent 2.21 billion euros and increased spending by 6.6%.
