Alicante-Elche airport has welcomed 17% more “low cost” passengers in October, carrying 76.4% of all passenger movements in the Valencia area, with a total of 455,244 passengers coming into the region from foreign lands. In fact, over the entire year so far, Alicante-Elche has seen a total of 3.2 million “low cost” passenger movements, representing an increase of 13% compared to the same period of 2012, whereas in the regional capital´s airport at Manises, they suffered a 2.3% drop, with a total of 980,209 passengers.
Not only is that a welcome statistic to both the airport and the area, the region alone is responsible for 56.5% of all air passengers into and out of the entire country, with Alicante-Elche now firmly fixed as the fourth busiest airport in Spain, behind Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca and Málaga, for budget travel.
Meanwhile, passenger numbers in the country´s capital have continued a dramatic decline, with Madrid-Barajas showing an 18.1% drop in the volume of passengers carried by low cost airlines between January and October, standing at 2.4 million travellers, according to figures released Monday by the Institute of Tourism on behalf of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. As for October, the fall was slightly less dramatic, but still showing a 12% drop, with 259,738 passengers carried on low cost routes.
Madrid is also suffering passenger number declines from traditional carriers too, with a drop of 8.8% to 9.26 million passengers, again not quite so bad in October, with 925,473 passengers marking a drop of 6.5%.
So far this year, the Spanish airports most used by low cost airlines were the Barcelona-El Prat, with 6.2 million passengers and an increase of 6.5%, Palma de Mallorca with 5.7 million passengers and an increase of 8.2%, Málaga saw 3.7 million passengers which is up 9.6%, and then, Alicante, as mentioned, with their 3.2 million passengers representing an increase of 13%.
