Although the plenary hall is sometimes attended by a small number of adults who act no better than children, this week, the youngest residents of Orihuela really did take their place in the political forum as the Sixth Children´s Plenary was held to commemorate the Convention on the Rights of Children. Following a presentation by the president of Unicef in Orihuela, Concha Montijano, as well as the mayor, Monserrate Guillén, the group took about proposing the appointment of a secretary and partaking in a variety of other similar activities, before reading out articles of the convention dealig with the rights to education, they then asking questions of the real politicians, who also included Emilio Zaplana and Rosa Martínez.

Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has announced that permission has now been granted by the Ministry of Public Works to enable her department to act on a project to improve accessibility in the vicinity of the Playa Flamenca town hall, including the N332 underpasses, the pedestrian crossings and the ramped access to the town hall itself. Scheurer said that “this work will be used to improve road safety”, especially where walkways are too narrow for pedestrians, and easing the passage through the pavements in areas which are “dangerous”. “This work has been planned for some time, but we were still waiting for the permit”, Scheurer said, but the administrative process is already complete so it is possible that the work could be finished before Christmas.

The departments of Employment, Development and Environment in Orihuela have signed a collaboration cooperative, whereas a number of unemployed people from the municipality will benefit from collecting redundant domestic appliances. The project, which is being overseen by Cáritas, will help six people who they consider to be at “risk of social exclusion”. Councillor Manuel Gallud, who runs both departments, explained that the cooperative began in San Vicente del Raspeig, where a workshop was created that saw used appliances collected. Those that could be repaired or already worked were sold on, those which didn´t were dismantled and sold for spare parts or scrap. Residents who want to dispose of an appliance can call 965176642 or write to the email address info@proyectogema.org and the cooperative workers will collect the items. More details are also available on the website, www.proyectogema.org.

Councillor for Equality, Emilio Zaplana, has this week presented the statistics of interactions by the domestic violence support team in the municipality, revealing that they took part in 122 interventions, of which 88 were female victims, including 82 with a previous complaint, and 34 were minors, a figure that represents “little change from last year”. By nationality, 53 of the women were Spanish and the rest were of foreign nationality, including 8 from the UK, 18 from South American countries, 5 Moroccans and 4 Europeans. In total, 52 of the cases were in the city of Orihuela, 18 in the villages and the same number on the Orihuela Costa.

Andalucian singer, Paco Damas, performed a concert this week to around 500 students from various schools in Orihuela, in which he played musical poems dedicated to women, interspersed with readings from a number of students, all aimed at promoting and nurturing the visibility of women in culture and education, recovering the memory of many forgotten poets and paving the way for equality and nonviolence, as the concert was organized by the Department of Culture as part the commemoration of the International Day Against Gender Violence, celebrated on the 25th of November.

The Municipal Sports Centre on the Orihuela Costa has announced an event to mark their 3rd anniversary, which will be held on the 6th of December at the centre. A number of activities have already been arranged, including a Football Tournament, for both children and adults, a drawing contest, a padel tournament, music, inflatables and much more, including the addition this year of an “EXTREME ACTIVE ZONE”, featuring various workshops and activities presented by skaters and extreme street sports enthusiasts, helping those who are interested to become “skateboard wizards”. Registration information for all activities is available at the centre, as well as via the town hall, for an event that promises a warm welcome to all.

The government team of Orihuela has approved payment for outstanding bills valued at onver a million euro, of which 263,000 euro is for Iberdrola, the electricity supply company, and two payments of 349,435 and 215,268 euro to the company which manages the landfill to which Orihuela´s solid waste is sent, Novalis. On a much smaller scale, a provision of 2,525 euro towards the annual children´s crib competition was also approved, as well as a number of smaller incentives and adjustments.
