ALCOHOL DESTRUCTION IN NIGERIA

Police officers in Nigeria have set about the destruction of 244,151 bottles of beer this week, all of which were confiscated from delivery shops and “Christian run” shops.

The operation took place in the city of Kano, in the North of the country, as alcohol is prohibited under Sharia, the moral code and religious law of Islam.

Spokesperson for the police, Aminu Daurawa, said, “We thank God that our unit has successfully destroyed 244,151 beer bottles from different places. We expect to restore the tarnished image of Kano”.

The African country of Nigeria is divided between a mainly Muslim north and the Christian dominated south. Sharia has been gradually implemented as the “instrument of conduct” through the country, which has caused numerous confrontations with the Christian minority.

Johnson Ikechukwu , owner of an “off-license” store said, “The authorities of the Sharia have crippled my business”, continuing, “I feel cheated by the seizure and destruction of my beer”.

From their point of view, the Islamic Police have insisted that they will continue with their campaign, until “every nook and cranny” of the state has been searched in order to “stop the sale and consumption of alcohol”.

Meanwhile, consumerism and supplying demand is thriving in these times of prohibition, with a number of breweries seeing the potential within the reduced market, Heineken being one, perhaps fuelled by the statistic that despite the ban, and despite having more Muslims in their population than any other country in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria is now the second largest consumer of Guinness in the world.
