MAYOR PAYS TRIBUTE TO TORREVIEJA ACTIVIST
Last Monday, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, unveilled a small monument in the Parque Reina de la Sal on the Los Balcones urbanization in memory of the local activist Carla Vaquera who died earlier in the year, together with her son, in the fatal train crash in Santiago de Compostela.
Carla ran the foundation “La Mujer es Una Diosa”, which provides assistance and shelter to women who have been abused by their partners, moving them from their unstable homes to shelters throughout Spain, where they can start a new life away from the dangers.
The ceremony was attended by Carla’s mother Grace and popular Extremadura singer Huecco, who is also involved in the foundation.
The monument depicts a woman reaching for the moon.
Snr Dolon said that Torrevieja will continue to support Carla’s foundation which will now be run by her mother. He said that the work it carries out is extremely commendable and should continue helping and saving the lives of abused women.
Meanwhile , Grace Vaquera thanked the mayor of Torrevieja and Huecco for all that they are doing to recognize the work of her daughter, who had helped many women through her foundation. She said that her daughter had only recently finished writing her third book on the day before she died in the train crash and that it would be published in the coming days.
The mayor said that the city will name a street and a park after Carla in 2014. Huecco then read out the words of a song that he had written to Carla titled ” Rose Garden ” the refrain from which is engraved on the sculpture placed in her memory.
