Spain; the food, the weather, the beaches, the art and music make it an obvious choice in anyone’s list of favourite holiday destinations. The regional variations, particularly when it comes to eating, give Spain an endlessly changing flavour that keeps people from all over the world coming back, often to stay forever. But did you know that Spain also has a thriving casino culture? Here’s a look at some of the country’s best gaming houses.

Madrid

The Casino de Madrid is housed in a beautiful old building on the Calle de Alcala that was designated a Spanish Property Of Cultural Interest in 1993. Chef Paco Roncero oversees a very popular restaurant; the venue has an upmarket, formal feel to it. Blackjack, poker, roulette and slots are offered.

Barcelona

Barcelona, with its fantastic regional cooking, beaches and unique architecture is a microcosm of Spain, though it’s quite separate in many ways, the Catalan language being a prime example. Casino de Barcelona is situated on Calle Marina in the Olympic Port area, which was regenerated for the 1992 games. The casino’s table games are supplemented by video poker and slots.

Santander

East of Bilbao and San Sebastian, on the Cantabrian coast, you’ll find Santander’s Gran Casino del Sardinero. The current building is nearly 100 years old; it’s located in the Plaza de Italia. Both gaming rooms have their own bar, and there’s a restaurant and an art gallery. Games include European roulette, blackjack and poker; a Texas Hold ‘Em tournament takes place regularly.

Marbella

Down on the south coast, try the Casino Marbella in the Hotel Andalucia, Plaza Puerto Banus. Five million visitors a year come to Puerto Banus to enjoy its upmarket shopping and dining facilities. Don’t miss Salvador Dali’s Rhinoceros sculpture! The casino offers nearly 13,000 square feet of gaming space; card games include Caribbean Stud Poker.

Majorca

If you’re tempted by the Mediterranean climate of Majorca, you’ll find the island’s only casino on Paseo Maritimo in downtown Palma. The island has more than 2,000 restaurants serving local specialities like sobrassada (a cured pork sausage) and ensaimada (a sweet pastry made with lard). If you’re still hungry when you get to the casino, the restaurant’s open until 2.00am. Games include blackjack and Omaha, and you can play the slots until 5.00am.

If you’re planning a casino tour of Spain, you might like to practise before you go; online blackjack site ace-ten.com is one option for those who want to hone their skills before hitting the tables. ¡Buena suerte!
