LITTLE SPAIN IN MANCHESTER

Andrew Atkinson at Manchester Christmas Markets

A ‘Spanglish’ Christmas brings the choice of both worlds – be it Paella or Lancashire Hot Pot – at the Manchester Christmas Markets. “Feliz Navidad”, said Clara from Spain – who has Spanish chocolate and biscuits on sale at Manchester Christmas Markets – the oldest and biggest Christmas Market in the UK. Ex-pats returning home this Christmas have joined in the festivities – with flights from both Alicante-Elche and Murcia Airports this Yuletide.

The Manchester Market – celebrating its 15th year – has in situ ‘Little Spain’ with Paella, Spanish Cerveza, Vino Tinto, and Chorizo on offer. “Home-from-home”, said wife Helen, as she enjoyed a glass of vino tinto – and a portion of Paella – cooked in a Wok. ‘Little Spain’, situated on Albert Square, oozes with the smell of Spanish Chorizo rolls, Paella, Spanish ham, Spain brewed Cruzcambo beer and Rioja wine. “It was like being in Spain – with the Paella and Chorizo rolls being cooked,” said Helen, from Los Montesinos, Alicante – and Penwortham, Preston. Tens of thousands of visitors have once again headed for Manchester’s Christmas Markets this year – with 300-plus stalls – serving up food and drink from throughout Europe.

From Spanish Paella to Dutch cheeses and mini pancakes, French breads and mulled wines, Hungarian goulash and French profiteroles. Hot chocolate, German beer, Hog roast, Bull sausages, Black Forest German sausage, chestnuts – and the traditional mince pies – not forgetting Lancashire Hot Pot!
