DRUNK-DRIVE PP COUNCILLOR MOWS DOWN PENSIONER

Opposition groups called for the immediate resignation of the councillor for Social Services, Disability, Immigration, Cooperation and Citizenship of the Madrid City of Alcorcón, María Pilar Araque of the Partido Popular, after she failed a breathalyser test; with almost triple the allowable rate of alcohol, after running over an elderly lady in her car on Christmas Eve.

The incident occurred on the 24th of December at around 7pm, when the 36 year old councillor was on her way from a meeting with friends, heading for dinner with her parents. As she drove along avenida de los Derechos Humanos, her Peugeot 207 collided with the 78 year old woman who was crossing the road, resulting in serious, life-threatening injuries in the impact. The victim was taken to hospital by emergency ambulance, suffering a head trauma and multiple injuries. The victim was later transferred to another hospital, once stable, where her condition was described as “improving”.

Having mowed the 70 year old woman down, the police were called and requested a sample of breath, which yielded a positive result of 0.70 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air, whereas the legal limit is 0.25.

The councillor was arrested on the spot and charged with crimes against road safety. She was later released to be referred to the courts, pending charges.

Members of the opposition political groups, namely the PSOE, IU and UPyD, demanded her resignation, with a spokesperson saying, “We demand the resignation of the PP councillor who ran over a woman while driving drunk: she has broken the law and must take responsibility”.

It is believed that the councillor has resigned from her post, with municipal sources stating that she was “devastated and very worried about what happened”.
