During Friday´s plenary meeting of the Orihuela government, it was noted that a letter had been presented to the administration which would mean that the censure motion to overthrow the government was invalid. This move was done to simply record the facts are continuing, and that no final decision was made and that we may have to wait until the extraordinary meeting next Friday to find out if the bipartite government will be replaced by a PP and Clr coalition.

Meanwhile, the secretary-general of the Regional Psoe in Valencia, Ximo Puig, said today that the censure motion signed by the PP and Clr “unworkable”, whilst also describing it as “insane” to consider that that the president of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra, and the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, would endorse a censure motion that included “five charged and one convicted” of criminal offences within the Partido Popular group.

Puig also expressed the need to “serve the interest of Orihuela” against a possible new PP government, whilst pointing out that although there has been a history of corruption in Orihuela politics, the current corporation has “shown that there may be an honest government”, concluding that he hoped ”common sense” will prevail in proving the motion unsuccessful.

In other news from the same meeting, the Three Kings Parade of Orihuela city was a hot topic of contention, with a vote led by the PP and Clr resulting in the parade through the city streets returning to the original route, a motion opposed by the government who wanted to reroute the parade on the grounds of safety, following the tragic death of a child in Málaga last year, a rerouting that came with the full backing of the police and emergency services.

The outgoing deputy mayor, Antonia Moreno of the PSOE, was formally thanked for her efforts whilst in office, accompanied by a round of applause, after formally resigning from politics last month. She now makes way for the next member of the Psoe list to join the government, Víctor Ruíz, who will move into a less senior role, as Antonio Zapata took the seat alongside the mayor, where his resigned colleague has now departed.

The Clr team filed a motion asking that both the weekly Orihuela market on Tuesday and Saturday remain stationed in its current location, against plans by the councillor for markets, Manuel Gallud, who wants to move the stalls to a new location, as Clr argue that the move would damage to both the traders and the city traffic. Gallud remained commited to the planned relocation, stating that only this week the traders from one of the markets voted 107 in favour of the move, with just 17 voting against and two abstaining, dismissing the argument that it would be damaging.

There was also a dramatic interruption by a member of the anti-eviction group Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca en Orihuela, José Andrés Berná, vocally complaining over the lack of commitment shown by the government to discuss a move to help those suffering evictions during the current financially trying times. For the second time, the group had urged a discussion on social rents, and for the second time, it failed to make the agenda.
