CHINESE IMPORTER DESTROYS 13,000 BOTTLES OF SPANISH WINE

China destroyed 13,000 bottles of Spanish wine valued at 7 million yuan (850,000 euro) last Monday after concerns that the container cooling system had exceeded maximum temperatures during transportation.

Local press, the “Zhengzhou Evening Journal” reported that the distribution company wanted to show its commitment to quality. The destruction “left a strong smell of wine in the town square”.

It was reported that the cooling system of the truck that transported the consignment of wine from the port of Qingdao, where it had arrived by boat, to the city of Zhengzhou, exceeded 40 degrees C for about 24 hours thereby reducing quality.

The Directors of the Chinese distribution company asked three wine experts to analyze the quality of the wine to see if it could be sold , and after all three give a negative verdict it was decided to carry out the public act of destruction.

The destruction took place in one of the main squares in Zhengzhou, capital of central China’s Henan Province, where a large crowd comprising employees of the distributor emptied the bottles, one by one, into an inflatable pool.

Although no detailed information of the Chinese distributor was released, the photos that accompanied the story showed that the bottles were from la Cooperativa Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes, a bodega in Villena, Alicante.
