Spanish rescue helicopter “Pesca 2” has been involved in an unusual extraction of crew from a stricken ship this week, as the vessel declared at risk of sinking was itself a rescue ship.

“Pesca 2”, which is operated by the Xunta de Galicia, winched 5 crew members from the deck of the “Esnaad 715”, which carries the UAE flag and was en route from Abu Dhabi from Rotterdam carrying an unknown cargo.

At around 17:00 on Tuesday, the call for assistance was made by the crew of Esnaad 715, alerting the Maritime Rescue service that the ship was taking on water and was at risk of sinking, located around 50 miles to the northwest of La Coruña.

On the day of the incident the seas around the Atlantic coast were subject to storms and waves of up to 10 metres high. The crew were airlifted from their ship and transferred to other rescue vessels before being transported for treatment in hospital.
