INVESTIGATION CALL INTO DEATH OF LION IN MADRID
The Animanaturalis animal welfare group has denounced the Circo Americano in Madrid, following the death of a lion used in performances.
This same circus and was sanctioned in 2012, for activities carried out between November 2011 and February 2012, violating the ordinance against noise pollution and operating without a license, the latter considered a very serious offense. In 2013, Madrid City Council issued two further sanctions, one for excess noise and for using vehicles without municipal authorization.
The circus operator has been mentioned in various complaints relating to animal welfare over recent years, and this latest incident is being used to highlight the abuse and mistreatment of animals in circuses.
Aïda Gascón, the Director of AnimaNaturalis in Spain, says that, “Lions, and most animals used in circuses, suffer from low temperatures, together with health problems characteristic of a life in captivity, such as atrophied muscles, the stress of an itinerant life or malnutrition, which often leads to death, sometimes at a very young age”.
Gascón continued to explain how shows at circuses not only infringe on the right to life and freedom of the animals, but also risk the welfare of the people.
Therefore, the groups has filed a formal complaint with Seprona, the animal and natural welfare branch of the Guardia Civil, to conduct inspections and investigate whether the animal was properly staffed at all times and received the appropriate care needed, and to take into account all offenses committed by Circo Americano.
Animanaturalis is part of the Infocircos coalition of animal rights protectors which includes ANDA, Born Free Foundation y FAADA.
