The number of registered unemployed people in Spain fell in February, with a total of 1,949 people now finding work, compared to January, representing the first fall in February since 2007with a total of unemployed people now standing at 4,812,486.

In addition to the drop in unemployment figures, the Social Security contributors increased by 61,557 people in February, with a total of 16,212,304 registered contributors.

In a statement this week, the Minister of Employment and Social Security, Fátima Báñez, said that the labour market has already turned and is confident that increased membership in the Social Security system will continue, after increasing for the first time in a February since the crisis began.

Meanwhile the Psoe spokesperson, Soraya Rodríguez, said that although the Psoe welcomes the fall in unemployment, there is “no cause for triumphalism”, because it is not a significant decrease.

However, what is perhaps significant in the area known as the Vega Baja, a zone which is showing an increase in growth and unemployment that is far greater than the rest of Spain, it would seem. Considering that across the country, 1,949 unemployed people found work, almost a quarter of them are in this area, with the number of registered unemployed people dropping by 406 people during February.

According to figures provided by the SERVEF employment agency, 293 men and 113 women secured work in February, more than double the 202 people combined in February 2013. The area where the biggest drop in unemployment has been seen is Orihuela, where 73 people have found work, Almoradí is in second place with a drop of 63, Catral in third with 42 fewer unemployed workers, and then Torrevieja where 37 people have secured themselves a job, around half as many as Orihuela.

However, it´s not all good news, as there are still a total of 37,564 people registered as unemployed, with Torrevieja leading the way with 10,596, and unemployment has increased in a small number of places, such as Cox, where an increase in 20 unemployed people has been registered, Pilar de la Horadada has increased unemployment by 4, and San Isidro and Daya Vieja both increasing by 2 workers losing their jobs.

In terms of the total number of unemployed people in each area, Torrevieja has 10.596, Orihuela 7.405, Almoradi 2.820, Callosa De Segura 2.146, Pilar De La Horadada 1.601, Guardamar Del Segura 1.258, Redovan 1.183, Albatera 1.135, Bigastro 996, Catral 975, Dolores 889, Rojales 850, Benejuzar 671, Cox 639, San Fulgencio 570, Rafal 557, San Miguel De Salinas 537, Los Montesinos 485, Formentera Del Segura 405, Benijofar 262, Algorfa 248, San Isidro 247, Ranja De Rocamora 231, Jacarilla 213, Benferri 207, Daya Nueva 196 and Daya Vieja 42.
