Although Torrevieja town hall has reduced their debt by 8 million euro, the reduction could have been considerably more, if it weren´t for the 16 million euro needed to pay in cases of “land grab”.

In order to comply with court rulings over land expropriated in the Plan General, the council has been forced to hand over around 16.2 million euro in tax payer´s money for various plots of land that were acquired for conversion and use for building.

Despite that huge payment for land, the Councillor for Finance, Joaquín Albaladejo, is pleased with the outcome of the budgets and the fact that the government team will not have to raise direct taxes again this next year, although still not ruling out having to take loans to pay for certain elements within the 2014 budgets.

With questions still remaining over the financial burden of the waste collection service, 2014 is looking somewhat brighter for the residents of the city, with Albaladejo confirming that the salaries of those who work for the town hall are safe for this year.
