Former Mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, has been given a date in which she will appear in court in relation to the case where work on the Plaza del Escorratel was awarded to a company before the tender process had been completed.

Having lost an appeal in which the Partido Popular councillor tried to avoid going to trial, the court have now given the 29th of May as a date when Lorente will face accusations of forgery of public documents by a public authority or official and gross negligence in this case, where she faces a 4,000 euro fine and disqualification from office for 9 months. A second former government member, Antonio Rodríguez Murcia, will also be facing charges.

The work on maintaining the plaza at El Escorratel in July 2008 is said to have begun without the project having been approved by the municipal council, subsequently seeing the 34,380 euro contract awarded to a company prior to the legally required tender process being fulfilled.
