The King and Queen of Spain attended a solemn mass on Tuesday, marking the tenth anniversary of the Madrid bombings which killed 191 people and injured over 2000 attacks on trains in Atocha, El Pozo and Santa Eugenia on 11 March 2004.

Many of the victims of the attack and their families were also present at the service which was held in the Cathedral Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid.

They were joined by their Majesties, HRH the Princess of Asturias and HRH Infanta Elena, Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, and prominent individuals representing the State institutions, the government and many levels of the political, social and economic world in Spain

After being greeted by the Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid Archbishop Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses were introduced to the President of the Association of Victims of Terrorism Angeles Pedraza, President of the Association of Victims Support 11-M , Angeles Dominguez, President of the Association of Terrorism Affected 11M, Pilar Manjon, and the President of the Victims of the Terrorism Foundation, Mary Blanco Mar.

A ceremony was also held at Madrid’s Retiro Park, where 191 white balloons were released into the air and white flowers placed in trees, in memory of a day that has become known in Spain as 11M.

A note at Atocha station, where all four trains were heading, read simply: "You will always be in our memory; we will not forget you."

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted a similar message: "My solidarity is with the families and my thoughts with the victims of the worst attack in our country. Spain is with you."

Locally there was also an Act of Remembrance carried out in Pilar de la Horadada where in La plaza ‘Víctimas del terrorismo’ where the mayor, Fidel Ros, laid a wreath on behalf the Town Council after which there followed a minute’s silebce.

The seven suspected ringleaders in the attacks blew themselves up two weeks later, after police moved in on a flat in which they were hiding.
