Stableford Pairs Competition for MABS Trophy
An overcast morning greeted us for a 1000 tee off at Altorreal. Today was a pairs competition for the inaugural MABS trophy. This trophy was donated to the society on behalf of MABS by the local representative Bob Clayton who is also a member of the LAMBS. Prior to the competition getting under way Bob a society member and also the area representative for MABS presented the trophy on their behalf to our Captain Andy Giles, this was done behind the 18th green with all society members present in brand new lambs shirts.
The course itself was in fair condition, having the best deals in the area does mean the course is well used, but all in all the greens ran true and the fairways were OK. The format was to have a low and high handicapper teamed up whenever possible. The handicaps were added together then halved this then being the team handicap; consequently there were no more than 3 strokes between team handicaps. It was played in a Texas scramble style with a minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 tee shots per player. The format seemed to work very well and there was no great wailing and gnashing of teeth from anyone.
The winners of the trophy with an excellent score of 50 points off 27 were, believe it or not Bob Clayton and Andy Giles.
Runners up, again with a great score of 48 points off 26 were Dave Cooper and Steve Chapman.
3rd with 45 points off 24, were Geoff Tempest and new member John Spencer.
It was also good to see one of the high handicappers win the longest drive prize, well done Roger Nickolds.
On completion of the golf it was, as usual back to the Final Whistle for the presentations and an excellent buffet, thanks to Mel and Stella. Bob Clayton also thanked the society for their continued support of MABS and presented badges to today’s winners.
All today’s prize-winners:
MABS Trophy – Bob Clayton & Andy Giles
Runners up – Dave Cooper & Steve Chapman
3rd – Geoff Tempest & John Spencer
Nearest the pins – 5th Hole Geoff Tempest, 10th Hole John Morgan, 17th Hole Geoff Marlow
