VIVACE CLASSICAL CHOIR TO SING HANDEL’S MESSIAH

The concert will be performed as charity events in three different venues, the first being the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas, on Thursday 3rd April at 7.30pm.

As we approach Easter, what better way to turn our thoughts to the Easter story than to attend a performance of Handel’s wonderful oratorio “The Messiah”. The oratorio, composed by George Frideric Handel in London in 1741, was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742.

After an initially modest public reception, “Messiah” has become one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.

Vivace will be joined by visiting soloists Mary Coffield, soprano, Rodney Porter, tenor and Arthur Berwick, bass. Mary, Rodney and Arthur are all well-known and respected singers in the North and North-East of England. They have extensive experience and a continuing desire to perform challenging music. What better than Handel’s “Messiah”, one of their favourite oratorios? This will constitute the third visit to our area of Spain to perform as soloists with Vivace. In earlier concerts each has given impressive performances: Mary and Rodney in Handel’s “Messiah” in 2011, Mary and Arthur in Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” in 2012, and most recently Rodney and Arthur in Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” in 2013. All three will now come together for the first time, and will be joined by Vivace’s Katy Pargeter as alto soloist for this performance.

The concert will be performed as charity events in three different venues, the first being the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas, on Thursday 3rd April at 7.30pm. Entrance is free, and there will be a retiring collection split between two excellent causes: Firstly, the Finca la Castellana, a local animal charity, now caring for animals that have been abandoned in great numbers since the crisis, and secondly, to support the continuation of the local appeal to help the needy in the town.

The second concert is a Memorial concert, to be held in La Siesta Church, on Friday 4th April at 7.30pm. Tickets are €6, and proceeds will be donated to Arco Iris’s Children’s Home in Mozambique. This was the favourite charity of Fiona Cooke, a well known and dedicated church member, and valued friend of Vivace, who died suddenly last year, and in whose memory the concert is being given.

The final concert will be presented in the magnificent church of the Colegio de Santo Domingo in Orihuela. Tickets are €5 and proceeds will be donated to Manos Unidos. If there are enough requests, a coach will be run for this final concert from Quesada to Orihuela, calling to pick up passengers in San Miguel en route at a cost of €5.
