Quite possibly another victim of the continual growth of Orihuela, with the Zenia Boulevard commercial centre becoming increasingly important for shoppers and leisure seekers, combined with administrative and political feet dragging, a proposed development set to transform Algorfa has been shelved.

Intended to invigorate the area directly off the motorway network, near the site of the cement factory and Sunday market, the 2007 project was set to see the one of the largest commercial centres in the country being built, with Eroski supermarket as the figurehead and some 563,000 square meters of area and accompanying it, the creation of 2,000 jobs, but it was announced this week that the Partido Popular government team has given approval for the return of the million euro deposit to the developer, Orishas Trust.

It is believed that part of the problem has been the failure of the administrative process to convert the required land in the general plan of the area, and the fact that since the original project was dated as 2007, the plan is “completely out of date”, in the opinion of the developer, as even Eroski themselves have been struggling through recent years, closing down many of its stores.

The plan had been supported by the majority of council members, and was seen with excitement by the locals of Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and the surroundings, as a much needed and ideal place for a super commercial centre, but it is believed that the developer has now tired of waiting for the approval to start the work. The local government team has said that not only does it intend to return the money to the developer; they will not seek any further explanations as to why the company has decided to pull out of the project.
