TORREVIEJA DOCTOR ARRESTED FOR CREDIT CARD FRAUD

Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested a female doctor who works at Torrevieja and Elda hospitals, who voluntarily surrendered, in connection to offences relating to charging goods and services onto the credit cards of colleagues.

According to the report in the case, the investigation began in December when several people reported fraudulent charges to their cards. The investigators were able to discover a relationship between the people who had complained, as they were all employees, doctors and nurses, of two hospitals in the towns of Elda and Torrevieja.

The investigation then pointed to a single individual, who is suspected of being involved in 45 cases relating to purchases totalling 5,000 euro, plus an additional 25 attempts at charging which were denied by the card issuer.

The doctor was arrested for allegedly using her employment status to access the locker rooms of health workers and obtain details of up to a dozen bank cards on which the charges were subsequently performed.

In addition, officers discovered banking information of other workers in the hospitals, but these do not yet appear to have been used for any illegal activity.

The doctor is charged with various crimes, including on suspicion of continuing crimes of fraud, and has already been made available to the courts of Torrevieja, where prosecution will take place.
