The municipal department responsible for Social Action, in collaboration with the ONCE Foundation, has launched the Pasblue Project, has launched a scheme aimed at improving the safety and independence of people with visual disabilities at the city’s traffic lights and pedestrian crossings
Councillor Antonio Luis Martínez-Pujalte said last week that the initiative is based on an audio installation, a device which is now available at seven pedestrian crossings which are activated by a remote control or via a Bluetooth ‘smartphone’.
The device works through an audible warning which can only be activated by a user with a visual disability, thus, in addition to assisting his passage, it avoid unnecessary sounds
The acoustic information transmitted through the system is based on discrete frequency tones and duration that allow the user to approach and move to the starting area with the assistance of ringtones. A number of different tones will indicate when they can begin to cross.
The device is installed in la Plaça de Baix, Puente Ortices with Corredora, Maestro Albéniz and Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, Reina Victoria with Jorge Juan, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez with Jorge Juan, en la Avenida de Alicante and Plaza de Benidorm and finally at la Plaza de Barcelona.
