MARCH – WARMEST AND DRIEST MONTH SINCE 2008

The temperature peaked at 28.6 degrees.

March was the warmest and driest month in the province of Valencia since 2008, with an average temperature of 11.3 degrees, 0.7C above the average, and an average rainfall of 22 liters per square meter, 41% below the normal climatological rainfall of 37.6 liters.

The Meteorological Agency also said last week that on many parts of the Alicante coastline, particularly on the Southern Costa Blanca, the amount of accumulated rain during the month has been less than five litres per square meter.

In terms of the March temperatures there has been a spike of cold weather, but several “abnormally warm” days between the 15th and 22nd, noting especially the 17th, when the temperature exceeded 27 degrees in several locations, peaking in Carcaixent Xativa at 28.6 degrees.

However there were two periods in which significant amounts of rainfall were recorded, but in a very small area. On the 12th/13th of the month some observatories exceeded 50 liters of accumulated rainfall in a 36 hour period with the maximum recorded in Antella at 80 litres.

On Sunday 30th there was rainfall with a torrential intensity to the south of La Safor Hills, just inland of Gandia, exceeded 100 litres and then showers of high to very strong intensity a little further south of the region, with an aggregate of 41 litres in less than three hours.

On balance though, with respect to the first quarter of 2014, the rains have been absent from most of the territory, and with there being so little the first consequence has been a lack of soil moisture, with less than 10% moisture on the maximum capacity estimated-over 2500 square kilometers of the province Alicante, almost half of the provincial area. This of course could have an effect on the current harvest of crops.
