NEW CREMATORIUM TO BE BUILT ADJACENT TO TORREVIEJA CEMETERY

Torrevieja cemetery will also be extended

Last week’s Torrevieja Plenary session began with a minute’s silence in remembrance of the recent death of President Adolfo Suárez, the first President of the Spanish democracy following the rule of General Franco.

However, as has become the norm over recent months, the minute didn’t pass in complete silence as it was broken by the noise and disruption happening outside the Municipal building with the Police and Refuse Collection demonstrations.

One of the main issues on the agenda generating greater interest than usual was the acceptance of the General Plan number 102, the extension of the municipal cemetery.

The Town Planning Councillor, Francisco Moreno, said that the land will not be reclassified and any building work must take into account the possible future need for the expansion of the National Highway 332

He said that it is planned to build a crematorium on the edge of the present cemetery and that additional adjoining land will be donated to the city by it’s owner to ensure the cemetery’s future extension.

Greens spokesman, José Manuel Dolon, said that there was undoubtedly a need for the extension of the funeral facility and he said that he was also satisfied with the adequacy of its location, but the PP then said that the council “must talk with residents living within 200 meters of the cemetery and obtain their agreement. ”
