Emiliano Casal retained his Spanish Lightweight belt in style on Friday night with a fifth round TKO. It was a clear and resounding victory to mark a return of Boxing to Torrevieja after an absence of over seven years. Emiliano dominated the fight in an evening of seven contests held in the ‘Cecilio Gallego Pavillion’.

Torrevejense boxer Emiliano Casal was defending his title against disputed title contender Andoni Alonso, who confidently replaced original contender King Daluz for the National Championship at ‘Lightweight’. From the opening bell, Casal took command of the centre of the ring to effectively launch his strong left jab at his opponent, who he easily outreached by several inches.

Growing in confidence, in the second round, a dominant Casal began putting his combinations together causing Alonso to hit the floor and take his first eight count from Majorcan referee Oliver Palomo.

The supremacy of Casal, who had returned to Torrevieja to appear in his adopted homeland after seven years absence, increased in the third with the right eye of Alonso becoming inflamed, needing major attention from his corner at the end of the round. In the fourth, the difference was becoming increasing noticeable, as the noise in the pavilion rose to edge Casal on towards victory, with Casal dropping Alonso for the second time after a powerful right cross

With Alonso beginning to tire and the champion looking ever more dominant, Casal continued his harassment on his opponent’s eye, with Alonso again losing his balance and now being unable to see, hitting the floor for the third time. At 1:10 of the fifth round, the referee declared a TKO against Alonso giving Casal his second defence of his title.

Among those attending was the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon , accompanied by councillors Luis María Pizana, Agustina Esteve and former Olympic speed walking champion Daniel Plaza.

Along with five three round Amateur fights, there was another professional bout at heavyweight between local boxer Magomed Azuev ‘Moja’, who won with a second round TKO against Slovakian opponent Gabriel Jazsai. After throwing a punch at Moja, Jazsai pulled up in pain, after damaging his hand and had to retire. Moja took his win gracefully and apologised to everyone that the fight was cut short.

The very International mix of fans from all factions of the local community also enjoyed five amateur bouts of three rounds each with fighters from Norway, Ireland, Britain, Murcia, Elche, Alicante and Torrevieja all competing. Emiliano thanked everyone for the support he had received, from his own boxing team, sponsors, the Town Hall and especially all the supporters who enjoyed the return of top class boxing to Torrevieja.

Meanwhile the management of local light heavyweight Ricky Pow have also been busy with confirmation that he will fight the Spanish Champion Gabriel Campillo on 9 May in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

The fight will be the main supporting bout on a card that features the European Welterweight title contest between Ceferino Rodriguez against Frenchman Ismael El Massoudi. A win for Pow will once again get his title aspirations back on track and put him firmly back in the European mix.
