Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa rumbled on Tuesday evening, at around 20:41, as a 1.7 magnitude earthquake hit just off the coast.
In recent months, experts have been warning of a possible increase in earthquakes, with concerns growing of a possible repeat of the devastating 1829 earthquake that killed hundreds of people.
However, as there is no definitive way of detecting or speculating such an occurrence in advance, there are no specific warnings of danger.
An earthquake evacuation and rescue drill was carried out last year in Torrevieja, with a major exercise also carried out for a number of days last week near Valencia.
