Members of the new team helping a tourist in Alicante

It would seem that at long last the authorities in Alicante have finally realised that they need to pay rather more attention to the requirements of tourists while they are visiting the city.

Nothing provides a worse image than a tourist who has been the victim of a crime or one who has suffered maltreatment, whatever the reason, as he returns and spreads word of the nature of his dissatisfaction back home or on travel review websites that have become so popular in recent years.

As such, agents of the policia locale have this week been transferred in to a new team of Tourist Police who began their duties last Monday.

The Department of Public Safety have created the force because they want to provide tourists with the best image of the city so during the tourism season there will now be ten officers per shift working the streets of Alicante and dealing specifically with assistance to visiting holidaymakers.

The officers will be responsible for overseeing their safety and for enforcing the city ordinances in the areas of the greatest influx of tourism in the city

Councillor Juan Seva said that the officers “will provide a safer environment for tourists during their stay in Alicante, through actions of prevention, protection and guidance. They will also be responsible for collaboration with government and businesses linked to tourism in the city.”

As well as ensuring the care and conservation of historic sites, monuments and the environment, officers will also pay special attention to any activities that may adversely affect tourism, such as dumping rubbish out of hours, begging, prostitution, alcohol or drug abuse on public streets.
