An officer of the Spanish National Police, José Manuel Pardo Souto, died on Wednesday as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty in 2012.

On the 23rd of October, 2012, José Manuel Pardo Souto was involved in the detention of a habitual prisoner, when, during a struggle, he struck his head, receiving a significant blow to the front of his head outside the police station in Lugo, rendering him unconscious.

Since then, the officer has remained in a coma, sadly losing his life on Wednesday of this week. At the time of his death, he was 40 years of age, married and had two children.

A memorial service was held at the social centre of his home town, As Nogais, after it was also announced he is to be awarded a posthumous Silver Medal of merit for service by the Directorate General of Police in recognition of his outstanding performance.
