A day out to the lovely inland village of Alcala del Jucar certainly brings with it some surprises.

The fascinating drive up takes us past no fewer than 6 different castles. Add to that the castle which towers over the village of Alcala del Jucar and you will see seven different castles in one day.

Between the castles the landscape is constantly changing.

Fields of vines give way to fields of almond, olive and orange trees. An interesting variety of villages, small towns dot our route. Our first stop is Almansa. It was here in 1707 that the final battle of the Spanish war of succession was fought.

On one side were the troops of Austria, Britain, Prussia and the Nederlands. On the other side stood the troops of France, Spain and Bavaria. A battle which resulted in the French speaking Charles II ascending to the Spanish throne. Although Almansa castle became a prize of war that day, the castle itself dates back to Moorish times.

After a visit to Almansa we set off through fields, pine forests and mountain ranges before finally dropping in to the beautiful gorge where sits the delightful cave village of Alcala del Jucar.

Whitewashed fronts of cave houses sweep down the mountain side. The Medieval castle perches above the houses on a white limestone rock. Below this the deep green waters of the river Jucar sweep through the valley.

Your first sight of this fabulous village is quite breath taking. Time in the village is followed by three course lunch with wine in a restaurant which offers us a panoramic view of the gorge and surrounding countryside. Later for those who want to, a guided walk down through the village which will include a cave visit is offered.

For those who are less energetic, there is the option of spending more time in the centre of the village. Either way, this beautiful, peaceful location offers a really memorable day out at the affordable price (including lunch) of only 27 Euro and will be available from Davids Coachtrips SL every Sunday
.
