The Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz, has given the police and Guardia Civil orders to investigate, and bring to justice, the people behind “dozens” of “offensive” messages posted on social network sites following the assassination of leading PP politician Isabel Carrasco, that could constitute “incitement to advocacy of hatred and crime”.
We reported this week how cyber law enforcers arrested numerous people in a similar crackdown on messages that could be considered as supporting terrorism, now the order to punish those who have commented on this latest incident will no doubt send a wave of concern over the rights to free speech and expression.
Following the death of Carrasco, numerous comments were seen filtering through social network sites, especially Twitter, celebrating the murder of the politician. Many of the comments were anonymous, although most of those are traceable, but even opposition politicians themselves were seen to post comments which could be considered derogatory, such as one Psoe councilor who simply posted a like from a quote, “He who sows the wind…”, prompting calls for action from the head of the socialist group.
The minister has pointed out that that of the 28 European countries, Spain is the only one where not a single party promotes hatred and xenophobia, whilst reminding everybody that this is a time to “reflect”, as thinking outside of politics and democracy only results in anarchy and chaos.
