SPAIN HAS THIRTY FOUR MORE BLUE FLAGS THAN LAST YEAR

In a press conference on Wednesday, it was revealed that Spain will be flying the Blue Flag of quality on a total of 573 beaches and 108 marinas this year, an increase of 34 over last year.

Of those new flags gained, 23 of them relate to beaches, the remaining 11 to marinas. The overall result meaning that one in five beaches of the coast of Spain are of the highest quality to be awarded the prestigious distinction.

The largest increase has been seen in the Balearic Islands, where an additional 25 beaches have now received the award, making their total 85, and the region of Murcia received an additional 7 flags, making 33 beaches, after losing some of their quality standards last year.

As Spain now has 573 beaches with a Blue Flag, the country ranks way ahead of the nearest rivals for quality, with Greece having 407, Turkey has 197, France has 379 and Portugal has 298.

As for marinas, Spain now ranks number one for the first time, with 108 marinas flying the flag, compared to 103 in Germany, 101 in the Netherlands, 90 in France and 62 in Italy.

In overall figures, Spain´s 681 is way ahead of the second placed France with 469, Turkey has 419, Greece has 417 and Italy has 333.

The five beaches in Torrevieja which have achieved the Blue Flag standard for this year are El Cura, Los Náufragos, Cala Piteras, Los Locos and La Mata (Sur), plus the two marinas at R.C.N. Torrevieja and Marina Internacional.

As for Orihuela, their seven Blue Flag beaches are at Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia -Cala Cerrada, Cala Capitán, Cabo Roig, Aguamarina and Barranco Rubio, plus two more at the Marina Cabo Roig and C. N. Dehesa de Campoamor.

The Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Borrego, says that the results show how Spain is confirmed as a holiday destination that puts the country on the “road to excellence”. Continuing that the “economic, social and environmental sustainability is essential to make this more productive, competitive and profitable”.
