In an extraordinary meeting this week, the town hall of Torrevieja approved the reinstatement of 25% of the December 2012 bonus expected by staff who work for the town hall.
The bonus was suspended at the time due to financial restraints implemented by the central government of Mariano Rajoy, in order to tackle the deficit.
Many officials had advised against the move, including the financial controller of the municipal accounts, saying that it would contravene the rules which are still in place, but if paid, it may go some way to appease the 600 municipal workers who will benefit, many of whom have continued to protest against the town hall, objecting to a variety of labour issues.
It is not yet clear how the struggling tax payers of the municipality will fund this banned bonus.
