Railway infrastructure company, ADIF, have embarked on the final stage of completing the necessary documentation to allow high speed trains between Alicante and Albacete to travel at up to 300 kilometres per hour.
It is expected that the approval will be reached in a “very short time”, which will reduce the journey time between Madrid and Alicante to just 2 hours and 5 minutes, shaving an extra 15 minutes of the current journey time.
Adif has confirmed that they are currently continuing testing the trains on a “commercial simulation”, to ensure that all relevant emergency braking and control systems are in place and working, before increasing the actual line speed.
Although relatively safe in comparison to other countries, the rail network of Spain has been dealt a number of worrying blows in recent years, firstly by the devastating crash in Santiago de Compostela, for which senior management are now facing the possibility of criminal charges, to more recent reports of financial corruption in awarding contracts.
