TRIATHLON RETURNED TO THE ORIHUELA COSTA

This weekend saw the second Orihuela Triathlon on the coastal area, with around 240 participants from across Spain taking to swimming, running and cycling their way through the Orihuela Costa.

The action started at 10:30 on Sunday, at the Dehesa de Campoamor, with Playa la Glea featuring in the water based events. Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, as well as the Councillor for Sports, Luis Galiano, explained how the athletes swam 750 metres through the sea, supported by two boats, followed by a 20 kilometre bike ride, finishing off with a gruelling 5 kilometre run.

Having been traditionally hosted in the Torremendo area, Scheurer explained how last year was the first time that the event came to the Orihuela Costa, and due to the phenomenal success of that race, it returned once more, helping to promote the Orihuela Costa and the beaches to the large number of participants in the race.

The town hall are providing a wide range of fixtures and facilities for the event, most of which were purchased new last year, and therefore at no cost to this year´s event.

Triathlon events are firmly fixed in the sporting schedule of Valencia, in fact only last weekend, local Orihuela team Tragamillas competed in the Copa del Rey, with both male and female teams doing well in the overall standings, only to now participate in this weekend´s activities too. The team will also be participating in the Carrera Popular Solidaria “Por la Vida”, which takes place on the Orihuela Costa on the 1st of June, starting at 10:00 in the morning, preceding an event to raise money for charity, which the triathlon team have pledged to also donate any remaining funds they have to the cause.
