This weekend, La Mata and Torrevieja may well be considered the safest place to be on the coast of Spain, as the beaches and municipal swimming pool plays host the Spanish national life-guard competition.
Taking place on the 24th and 25th of May, the event will see over 100 athletes take part, all looking to be crowned the champion of life-savers.
It may well be difficult for some of the heroes of the beach to reach the accreditation of one of the competitors though, as Concepción Escatllar Fernández de Misa is one of the athletes taking part, having already won 50 international medals, including merit from the Spanish Olympic Committee.
The event has been organized by the sports department of Torrevieja town hall, in association with both the national and regional groups representing life guards, the Federación Española de Salvamento y Socorrismo (FESS) and the Federación de Salvamento y Socorrismo de la Comunidad Valenciana (FVSS).
