 FRIDAY IS D-DAY

This Friday morning on Exite Radio, we are going back in time. Way back in fact, to a time long before many of us were even born, myself included, because it´s D-Day.

Or, more to the point, Friday marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, when Operation Neptune saw allied troops take to the beaches in France in the largest seaborne invasion in history, which began the invasion of German-occupied western Europe, led to the restoration of the French Republic and contributed to an Allied victory in the Second World war.

All of this week preparations have been underway for a major ceremony to recognize the achievements of those involved, with veterans coming together to recognize the efforts of each and every one of themselves.

So, on Friday, we are going back to an era of war classics, songs that evoke memories and moments of heartache, pain, and indeed pleasure, whilst hearing from some of the people involved and revisiting one of the most pinnacle moments in a bleak history of the world, that became the roots of the free world we can all so easily take for granted today.

Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields, the Andrews Sisters are amongst some of the stars of the day that your ears will be treated to, as we turn back the sands of time for 3 hours from 8am (7 in the UK), and share a moment with those who were there, though some may want to forget, many more want to remember, and we try to keep history alive and share the experiences, knowledge and lessons learnt and hope that some of the younger generations can keep those memories alive.

The commemoration of this weekend also coincides with other events for both historians and futurists alike. As those lessons from the past may be learnt, war still ravishes today. That is why on Sunday Spain will be recognizing the men and women of the armed forces today and in the past, with a tribute to the “fallen”, as the Dia de las Fuerzas Armadas is celebrated, postponed because of the European Elections. The display on Sunday will also form a firm place in history, as the last of such events presided over by the current King of Spain, Juan Carlos, accompanied by his son, Filipe, who will take over as King in a matter of weeks.

The proceedings will start with the hoisting of the flag in the Plaza de Colón in Madrid, followed by a tribute and address, and then the traditional parade of members of the armed forces through the streets of the city, but with these more austere times, some of the air displays have been toned down.

To top all of that off, Torrevieja will also be playing a very small part in recognizing military power, small in terms of scale rather than content, as the military model display returns to Torrevieja, being held at the Vista Alegre centre from Saturday the 7th until Friday the 20th of June. An extremely popular event enjoyed by all ages, this really is worth visiting, if only to admire the amount of detail that the models display, as well as the amount of time and dedication that their creators must have put in.

Exite Radio is available across the Torrevieja and Orihuela areas on 93.1fm on your radio, but you can also listen via the internet, on your smartphone, tablet or computer, by simply visiting the website, www.exiteradio.com. So, on Friday, dress appropriately for the time, remember your ration books, and enjoy 3 hours of pure nostalgia, with a sprinkling of history, from 8 in the morning, as we do our bit to honour those who took part in making history for our future.
