As the countdown to May´s national elections in Spain, the first of no doubt many people friendly reforms has been announced by the government, after years of penalising the tax payer with increased fees and charges across the entire public funded sector.
There are more announcements likely over the next few months, but this first one on Friday details how the government is to restrict banking fees on using credit and debit cards, currently averaging around 0.8%, the banks will be limited to charging a maximum of 0.2% in the case of debit cards and 0.3% for using a credit card.
Another campaign approved on Friday sees the creation of a new PIVE scheme for trucks. Private car owners have managed to obtain significant subsidy towards changing their old car to a new one, now this scheme will be extended to hauliers who will be able to share a 400 million euro grant from the European Investment Bank and will also be able to benefit from reduced toll charges for driving during off-peak hours on the motorway network. Normal drivers may also be able to save by driving off-peak.
Grants for focusing on energy efficiency in rehabilitating buildings, especially hospitals and hotels, will be able to come from a share of a 350 million euro bonus, which will also apply to renewing agricultural equipment, and there will be a focused drive on reducing paperwork in public administrations through a Bureaucratic Agility Plan.
There are lots more initiatives due to be announced, but add to all of these another 300 million euro towards grants to allow Spanish companies to access international markets, this is the first real announcement of a firm financial commitment that may well prove that the road to recovery is well and truly paved, making happy voters in early 2015.
